Notre Dame

"Nothing lasts forever". Unfortunately, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris became all too familiar with this concept. The world stood still and watched as history went up in flames. What will rise from the ashes? Should it be restored to its former glory, or is it time to look towards the future and evolve with the times? This is my answer.

Gothic cathedrals focused on height and light, which was achieved through pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying buttresses. For me, the true significance of the Notre-Dame is its celebration of the technology of the time it was built. To capture this, I designed a new roof using the technology that is available to us now instead of recreating the original roof. I made my structures light and temporary because I believe that the Notre-Dame will continue to evolve beyond the present moment, recording the constantly evolving technology along with it. Each moment of time is captured, contrasting the old against the new, turning it into a beautiful, never ending piece of art.
