adapTable
A reimaging of the table to cater for modularity and inclusivity, allowing it to adapt to any situation and people from all walks of life.
There were 2 guiding principles for this project:
Encouraging a circular economy through conscious designing, by using recyclable materials, incorporating modularity, and having multi-use functionality to increase the value of each piece of furniture.
Creating an inclusive community through the use of innovatively designed furniture that can be used by people of all ages and abilities.
Hence, the considerations were:
Height needs to be adjustable to accommodate for all users, such as children and people in wheelchairs.
Needs to be light weight such that everyone can carry it, be it older people who do not have as much strength or for people who are recovering from injuries.
Needs to be easy to take apart to allow for different uses and also for easy storage and maintenance, so as to extend the lifespan of each piece of furniture.
By choosing to go with the smallest denomination of a hexagon, the triangle, it opens up a world of possibilities for different connections and uses. The final iteration also has the widest height range in the most streamlined version.
The leg is made out of aluminum due to the fact that it is lightweight, rust resistant and easily recyclable. The table top panel is made out of recycled plastics to help reduce waste.
Adjusting the height of the table requires the user to twist the table into the unlocked position, bring it to the desired height, before twisting and pushing it down to keep it locked at that position. The direction of the rotation for the higher section is in the opposite direction from the lower section, such that when the height is being adjusted at either section, the other will stay locked. Each notch is made at 50mm increments.
To ensure that the table tops are free to be adjusted to different heights even while the tables are connected, the joints connecting the tables are designed to be at the legs. The same joint is present at the panel designed for the table top as reinforcement, and also for when the table top is removed and used just as a panel.
